Why I’ve reconsidered Slavery and why I want to be one…

When some think of the word slavery, feelings arise that are engrained into our beings. Feelings of disdain, anger, empathy, and always a general disapproval. I would argue that not only is slavery a good thing but we should strive to be the best of slaves. Not a slavery of one man owning another, but of Christ being our master and us slaves to his will.

Romans 6:17-18 tells us the truth of our status in this life. We are either slaves to sin or slaves to righteousness. There is never a time that we are not  slaves to something. Therefore now that we are bought by the blood of Christ, we are forever in his debt. We now being commanded by him, for the glory of God, towards righteousness. So how are we as slaves supposed to serve our master, Christ Jesus?

We must turn to scripture for the answer. 1 Timothy 6:1-2b, has a quick interjection for slaves that we must not miss. Although this is directed towards slaves who were owned by man, the correlation to us and Christ is indisputable. Timothy tells us that we are to regard our masters worthy of all honor. This is a reflection of the slaves heart towards the master. Since our master is not only the one who commands us but more importantly the one who sacrificed himself for us, we are to know he is worthy of all honor. Our heart and view of our savior is directed in how we serve him. Why would you not want to do all you can for the one who saved you?

In the second part of verse one we find the reason why we must be thankful slaves to Christ. It is so that through our service our master may not be reviled. How would it look to the world if you proclaim the name of Christ but live in strife, visibly disobeying your master to conform to the world. The people of the world will notice your disobedience and know you put no worth to your master. The slave is always a reflection of the master.

How we serve our great Savior or lack there of shows the world how important He is to us. It makes the world think either there is worth to the slave’s claims of their master, or that they are a babbling idiot. They don’t even believe what they say. How will your service to your Savior and master reflect who he is? Will the world see your service and consider him a great God, or see your disobedience and know you are a liar?

My prayer is to always be a slave dedicated to his master. For my master, Jesus Christ, is the one who saved me from death. Therefore, not only will I serve him in joy and as hard as I can, I will die to myself for his righteousness so that those who see me serve may know that my master is WORTHY OF ALL HONOR. He is God.

You are a slave. How will your service be seen?
